Artist Statement

Ellie’s current body of work incorporates narratives from mythology and literature with biographical and social concerns particularly themes of addiction and the way in which women have been represented in art and literature in a patriarchal society. In the process of making these paintings, Ellie is building her own vocabulary of symbolism which she weaves into the narratives.

Ellie is inspired by the highly imaginative ancient art found in mosaics and tapestries and also early 20th-century figurative art when the huge shift away from western formal realism had taken place and figurative artists were exploring imaginative ways of representing the human form and new narratives. Her biggest influences from this era are Picasso, Modigliani and Gauguin. She is also very inspired by female contemporary figurative artists working today including Paula Rego, Eileen cooper, Mellissa Kime and many more.
